Electrical Apprenticeship Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in the NJATC Electrical Apprenticeship Program. The training program is a 3 or 4 year course that consists of On-The-Job training as well as class room instruction. The OJT portion of your education is conducted between your classroom sessions, and is carried out with one or more of our associated contractors.

Inside Wiremen install conduit, electrical wiring, fixtures, and electrical apparatus inside commercial buildings and in a multitude of industrial settings. Major duties for Inside Wiremen include:

  • Planning and initiating projects
  • Establishing temporary power during construction
  • Establishing grounding systems
  • Installing service to buildings and other structures
  • Establishing power distribution within a project
  • Planning and installing raceway systems
  • Installing new wiring and repairing old wiring
  • Providing power and controls to motors, HVAC and other equipment
  • Installing receptacles, lighting systems and fixtures
  • Troubleshooting and repairing electrical systems
  • Installing and repairing traffic signals, outdoor lighting and outdoor power feeders
  • Installing fire alarm systems

In performing these duties, Inside Wiremen must use many different kinds of tools, ranging from simple one and two-hand tools (such as pliers, screwdrivers, and cable-cutters) to power assisted tools like electric drills and cable pullers. They occasionally operate heavy equipment such as trenchers and aerial lifts.

Over the course of the five-year Inside Wiremen apprenticeship program, apprentices must acquire a wealth of technical knowledge. A recent job analysis identified 83 specific knowledge areas that are important for successful job performance. A few of the most important ones are knowledge of:

  • The national electrical code
  • How to work with energized circuits
  • Blueprints (including symbols used)
  • Electrical schematic diagrams
  • State and local electrical codes
  • First aid
  • Hazardous materials
  • Specific job safety rules

Some of the most important skills to be learned are:

  • CPR
  • Reading a wire table to determine conductor size required
  • Terminating aluminum or copper cable
  • Terminating high voltage cable
  • Splicing high voltage cable

Requirements

Q:  How Do I get started?

A:  It all starts with the Application… Online Apprenticeship Application here…

To begin an application, you must request/create a User Account. Once your account is confirmed, log in and select “Application” tab. Before you begin, be sure to have the following information readily available: Proof of Age, Proof of Completion of High School, an Official High School Transcript, Verification of completing at least one year of High School level Algebra with a passing grade, a DD-214 (for veterans status), Birth Certificate or Passport, Work History or Resume, and proof of a Valid Driver’s License. Once the Application is received with all of the supporting documents, you will be scheduled for an Aptitude Test.

Q: What is the Aptitude Test and what does it consist of?

A: The Aptitude Test…

After you complete online application, you will receive a email inviting you to schedule a date to participate in the aptitude test.  The test itself is approximately 3 hours in length and is strongly based on Algebra and Reading Comprehension.

Q: What is the Interview like?

A: The Oral Interview…

The Interview Committee is comprised of representatives of electrical companies of the Reno/Sparks area that we have contracted with to provide employment and On the Job Training  and representatives of the IBEW Local 401.  You are asked a series of standardized questions and evaluated on your responses.

Q: What is the Waiting List?

A: The Eligibility (Waiting) List…

Once the Test and Interview are completed, your scores are totaled and based on that number, you are placed on a waiting list.   As we fill our Apprenticeship Classes (based on the need for Apprentices that our Contractors place on us) we start at the top of the list and work our way down until either the class is full or the need is met.

Q:  How long is the Waiting List?

A:  The length of the Waiting List is irrelevant…

Because your position on the waiting list is based on how well you score thru the Testing/Interview process, It doesn’t matter how long the list is.  The higher you score, the higher you sit on our waiting list.  The list may be hundreds of people long, and you may be sitting in the top 10.

Q: What is Pre-Apprenticeship?

A: Pre-Apprenticeship…

Pre Apprenticeship (Apprenticeship Readiness Course) is an 180 hour class that must be completed with a passing grade in order to proceed into the apprenticeship program.  It provides you with a basic set of skills, safety training (OSHA-10) and First Aid/CPR.

Q: How long will all of this take?

A: Wait time…

It is impossible to determine how long you will be on the waiting list.  There are multiple variables that prevent accurate estimations.  These variables are: how well you scored in the Testing/Interview process, the demand for new Apprentices the Contractors place on us,  Classroom Availability, and the changes to your position on the Eligibility List.

Q: How can my position change on the Eligibility List?

A: Refreshing the Eligibility List…

With every new batch of Applicants that go thru the Aptitude Test and Interview, the waiting list gets refreshed.  Just as when you were added to the Waiting List, you bumped previous Applicants down, with each subsequent Test/Interview your position may be adversely affected as well.
