Electrician Apprenticeship – Inside Wireman
The Contra Costa County Electrical Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee (JATC), in partnership with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), offers a no-cost, five-year apprenticeship that allows you to earn wages and benefits while learning a skilled trade. Apprentices receive paid on-the-job training and classroom instruction leading to a lifelong, rewarding career in the electrical industry.
The Contra Costa County Electrical JATC provides the highest quality training to those pursuing a career as an Inside Wireman. Apprentices earn while they learn—working under experienced journeypersons while attending classes at our state-of-the-art training center in Martinez, California.
The Inside Wireman installs, maintains, and troubleshoots electrical systems such as conduits, wiring, lighting, and motor controls in residential, commercial, and industrial environments. Projects range from hospitals and universities to refineries and manufacturing plants.
Program Details:
- Duration: 5 years
- 8,000 hours of paid on-the-job training (OJT)
- 900 hours of classroom instruction
- Classes held September through May
- Starting wage: $26.50/hour (40% of journeyman rate)
- Approximate 10% wage increase every 1,600 OJT hours and successful class completion
This is a registered apprenticeship program jointly sponsored by IBEW Local 302 and NECA. Apprentices enjoy excellent wages, healthcare coverage, and pension benefits while gaining experience that leads to journeyman status.

Requirements
Applicants must meet the following qualifications:
- Minimum age 17 to apply, 18 to begin work
- High School Diploma or GED
- One full year of high school algebra with a grade “C” or better
- OR one semester of college algebra with a “C” or better
- OR completion of the NJATC Tech Math online course
- Qualifying score on aptitude test
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
- Drug-free (testing required)
- Laptop computer for coursework
- Must reside within Contra Costa County or the surrounding areas
Required Documents:
- Copy of High School Diploma or GED
- Official sealed high school transcripts verifying the algebra requirement
- Copy of a valid Driver’s License or government-issued ID
- If educated outside the U.S., a recognized credential evaluation (per National Council on the Evaluation of Foreign Educational Credentials) must be submitted
