Local 89's JATC is an Apprenticeship program designed to take any individual with little to no experience and train them to succeed in the Ironworking Industry. There is regular wage increases every 6 months and advancement opportunities. There is no tuition fees and classes are 1 week long 7 times a year for 3 years. The remaining weeks in the year, you would be working and learning in the field.

Assist in completing Ironworking jobs as you learn the Trade. Earn as you Learn.


Looking for individuals who are motivated, hard working, attentive to detail, and can handle working outdoors in Iowa, that are ready to start a career in Ironwork. An apprentice ironworker will learn on the job how to rig iron, signal cranes, connect steel, bolt up steel, layout for all aspects of Ironwork, you will also learn how to use equipment like fork-trucks and scissor lifts, along with aerial boom lifts. There is a variety of aspects to the Ironworking Trade that can include working on tower cranes, wind turbines, window wall systems, handrail and stairs, welding, decking, pre-cast erection, pre-engineered metal buildings, and so many other potential tasks. As an Ironworker we are expected to work in all weather conditions through-out the year. We have a 3 year apprenticeship that has pay increases every 6 months as the apprentice progresses through the program. Classes are 7 separate week long classes each year, until graduation.

  • Must be 18 or older 
  • Must have high school diploma or equivalent
  • Pass a pre-employment screening
  • Have reliable transportation
  • Willing to travel in 23 counties if necessary for work
